On July 2012, from 1 to 7, the Quinquennial Congress of the International Musicological Society was organized for the first time in its history in Rome, at the Auditorium Parco della Musica. More than 25 years after the first and only other congress held in Italy, in Bologna, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia got the privilege of hosting the most important meeting in the world of the musicological discipline and music research at its headquarters at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, together with Musica per Roma Foundation and with the fundamental support of the three public universities of Rome: La SapienzaTor Vergata and Roma Tre.

The main theme of the congress - Musics Cultures Identities - was chosen with the aim of examining the role of music in past and present as a construction tool, as well as expression of different cultural identities and the contribution that music can still have in encouraging understanding and dialogue between cultures, to create a network of relationships between them, a common ground that allows to identify ourselves with a broader identity than the one we are accustomed to recognize as ours.

The congress was inaugurated on Sunday, July 1 at 5 pm in the Sala Santa Cecilia with the Opening Ceremony and the Inaugural Lectures by Martha Nussbaum, American philosopher, an important scholar of Greek and Roman philosophy, political philosophy and ethics and by Francesco Remotti internationally renowned anthropologist, currently Professor of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology at the University of Turin.

Every day there were 20 parallel sessions including round tables and panel discussions, study groups and free papers, all divided into thematic sessions. 650 speakers were accredited in total, with representatives from all continents and most countries of the world and as many participants as daily average. The official languages of the papers were all official IMS languages: English, French, Italian, Spanish and German. Parallel events included concerts, presentations and guided tours by major musical institutions of Rome, in addition to the traditional Books and Music Fair, which has been freely open to the wider public.

An additional day, Sunday, July 8th was dedicated, as usual, to post-conferences and other meetings necessary to study groups in addition to those already scheduled during the week, both at the Auditorium and in other sites in Rome.

A dedicated website (www.ims2012.net) was created and continually updated in order to ensure access to all relevant information, since the opening of the Call for Papers in 2011 and also during the development of the programme, giving updates of the different stages of its evolution. The website included also an online system to register to the congress and all practical information about it and about the city and the Auditorium, beeing used and userful even during the congress itself. The website will no longer be active from June 2013.
