The Life and Operas of Giuseppe Balducci by J. Commons

Born in Jesi, Giuseppe Balducci forged his career as a composer in Naples, where he entered the household of the noble and influential Capece Minutolo. From 1817 until his death he occupied the position of music-master to the family's three daughters, and for them he composed five chamber operas for women's voices and piano accompaniment. Balducci's theatrical operas, on the other hand, were presented upon the stages of Naples, at the Teatro San Carlo, the Teatro del Fondo and the Teatro Nuovo.

From the studies carried out over several decades by Jeremy Commons, there emerges an account of a composer who, though certainly a minor figure in the crowded roll-call of the Neapolitan school of the early 19th century, was nevertheless of very real interest since, even if a shadowy figure in himself, he moved in high-ranking circles of both the local and the international society of Naples.  His story provides us with a fascinating picture of the refined and elegant upper-class life of one of the most colourful cities of 19th century Europe.
