Giovanni Sgambati: musicista dell'avvenire o epigono romantico?

Giovanni Sgambati (1841-1914), pianist, conductor and composer, carried out a fervent and meritorious activity for a renewal of the Roman and then Italian musical life, promoting the interest in instrumental, symphonic and chamber music and contributing to decisive and original way to make known the music of beyond the Alps. A prodigy boy, he was a pupil of Liszt and bound by friendship and esteem to Richard Wagner, thanks to which he published his first compositions. A Cecilian and Philharmonic academic, with Ettore Pinelli he laid the foundations for the establishment of the musical Lyceum, the Roman Orchestral Society and the "Quintetto della Regina". Acclaimed pianist, he carried out his concert activity in Rome - mostly in the noble salons of the foreign community stationed in the capital - and abroad, where he had triumphal welcome.
