Thirty years later: what we owe to Fedele d'Amico

Edited by Annalisa Bini e Jacopo Pellegrini

Volume D'Amico His opposition to clichés is not due (as is often believed) to a bilious temperament of a contrarian bastian, but rather to a strenuous "moral grounding," a fighting spirit that is directed against the forms of alienation produced, in his view, by culture and entertainment in neocapitalist society: cinema and television, actualizing directors, works performed in the original language, indiscriminate neologisms. A complex and contradictory figure, hostile to others and to himself, d'Amico is well known (if not always highly regarded) in Italy, much less so abroad, precisely because of the volage nature of many of his interventions.
Rather than taking stock of him, this volume aspires to offer fertile material for further research: that would rethink his lecture, verify his perspectives, and discuss the opinions clinging to his account, beginning with the charge of misoneist.
Those who took part in the Roman conference on d'Amico - specialists and scholars from different disciplines and generations - were joined by additional scholars, including foreign ones. In dialogue with them is an anthology of dispersed writings, republished here for the first time, and unpublished documents from d'Amico's archive. Completing the picture, in a separate volume, is the inventory of his music library, which is now part of the collections of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia.
