The Language of Stravinsky

by: Angelo Cantoni

Volume Stravinskij The Language of Stravinsky proposes new ways of looking at Stravinsky's work more than 50 years after his death. It considers both individual compositions and the evolution of his compositional language during his lifetime.
The main purpose of the volume is to analyze and clarify the intimate coherence of Stravinsky's music, despite the wide variety of styles, instrumental combinations and theatrical modes with which he engaged.
Although his career is often considered to be divided into three distinct periods-Russian, neoclassical, and serial-all of his output can be traced back to a unique and wholly distinctive compositional figure.
The analysis presented in this account identifies the basic elements and grammar of this musical language. Each of the book's eight chapters focuses on one aspect of Stravinsky's musical language, following it chronologically within each chapter. The same works are therefore often studied in different chapters, looking at them from a different musical perspective.
This diachronic analysis of Stravinsky's music thus ends up providing important new insights into his work.
