auditorio pio

Auditorio Pio ristrutturato Early in the 1980's, new laws about public safety in places offering music and entertainment imposed radical changes upon the Sala Accademica, necessitating removal of the chamber season to the Auditorio Pio. But the hall in Via della Conciliazione also required radical modifications to improve acoustics. The renovated hall was inaugurated in October 1994, with a symphonic concert directed by Carlo Maria Giulini.

Meanwhile, beginning in 1992 a competition for the new Auditorium had been announced, which was intended to stand on the area between the hills of Parioli and the Villaggio Olimpico. The project designed by Renzo Piano won, and work began in 1995. On 21 April 2002, Sala Sinopoli – intended for the chamber season – and the small hall subsequently named Sala Goffredo Petrassi, were opened to the public. Sala Santa Cecilia was inaugurated in December of that same year. In the years since then, the summer season took place at the Campidoglio until 1990, at Villa Giulia in 1991 and finally at the Terme di Caracalla for two years. In addition, beginning in 1990 the Accademia launched a series of special seasons – “Matinees at Teatro Valle” and “Santa Cecilia for Children” – which have since been blended into the current “Tutti a Santa Cecilia!” series.
