sala accademica and teatro argentina

Teatro Argentina In 1952 another national competition was announced for the construction of a new auditorium in Rome in the area of the so-called Borghetto Flaminio, behind the Ministry of the Navy. Meanwhile, since 1948 concerts had been moved to Teatro Argentina, the glorious 18th century theater that had hosted, among others legendary works, the premiere of Rossini's The Barber of Seville.

Unfortunately, the new competition resulted in a 3-way tie; once again construction of the new auditorium was postponed. In this period, the young Herbert von Karajan made his debut during the Accademia season, along with Arthur Rubinstein, Walter Gieseking and Carlo Maria Giulini. The chamber season continued in the Sala Accademica and the summer season at the Basilica di Massenzio. At the close of the 1957-58 season, the total number of concerts given since the Accademia's founding came to 4,216.
