The competition announced in 1934-35 for the new Auditorium - which was to have been built on the site near Circus Maximus now occupied by the FAO complex - was inconclusive, so once the Augusteo was demolished the Accademia began an itinerant period while it searched for a new home, a period destined to last almost 70 years.
In the decade 1937-1947, the symphonic season took place at Teatro Adriano, a Liberty-style theater built at Piazza Cavour to accommodate various kinds of shows, including circuses; it has since been converted into a multiplex cinema. The chamber seasons continued as always in the Sala Accademica, and the summer seasons at the Basilica di Massenzio. As of September 1947, a total of 2,973 concerts had been performed since the founding date.
